Research

The Department of Philosophy has strengths in three main areas:

History of Philosophy including Ancient, Medieval, Modern and Contemporary Philosophy, both analytic and continental
Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind and Metaphysics, pursued with analytic methodologies but open to the influences of the continental tradition as well.
Ethics, Legal and Political Philosophy, Social and Value theories.

We promote research in the Department through a very rich series of activities, like Colloquia and workshops:

  • Department Colloquia
  • The Scientia Workshop
  • The Joint Legal Philosophy Colloquium
Seminar and Lecture series:
  • The Melden Lectures
  • The Medical Humanities Series
  • The Social and Applied Epistemology Series

And by hosting and supporting the activities of several research groups:

  • The California Phenomenology Circle
  • The Southern California Epistemology Network
  • The Southern California Metaphysics Network
  • The Hypatia Society
  • The MAP Regional Coalition
  • The UCHRI Multi-campus working-group

The Department hosts two research centers:

  • Center for Knowledge, Technology & Society
  • Center for Legal Philosophy (co-hosted with the School of Law).
