LATIN 103CICEROBRANSCOME, D.In this course, students will read in Latin all of Cicero’s first Catilinarian oration (In Catilinam I) and selections from
Catilinarians 2-4. The main goal of the course is to introduce students to reading Ciceronian prose in Latin, while paying attention to stylistic and rhetorical features of that prose. But we will also consider the historical context of Cicero’s speeches against Catiline, a disgruntled Roman senator, whose attempted coup to overthrow the government of Rome was foiled in large part by Cicero himself during Cicero’s year as consul (63 BCE).
