LATIN 100PETRONIUSZISSOS, P.In this course we will read a selection of episodes (both prose and verse) from Petronius’ Satyrica, a fragmentary Roman novel probably dating to the Neronian Age. We will pay close attention to grammar, syntax, vocabulary and, more generally, the various peculiarities and difficulties of reading Latin prose and poetry. We will also consider the picture of Roman society the Satyrica offers, along with aspects of Petronius’ writing style, and the generic issues that arise in this rather racy text, the earliest Roman novel to have reached us in substantial fragments. (Prerequisite: Latin 1C or equivalent, or consent of the department. This course may be repeated for credit as topics vary.)
