LATIN 103CAESARS CIVIL WARZISSOS, A.In this course we will read a selection of episodes from the Civil War (Bellum Civile) of Julius Caesar, paying close attention to vocabulary, morphology, syntax, and, more generally, the various peculiarities and difficulties of reading Latin prose. We will identify and analyze the principal features of Caesar’s brilliant and lucid writing style. We will also consider the rhetorical and ideological thrust of the Bellum Civile, as well as, more broadly, the critical events in the collapse of the Roman Republic that it narrates. (Prerequisite: Latin 100 or equivalent, or consent of the department. This course may be repeated for credit as topics vary).
