| LATIN 1B | FUNDAMENTALS | CLAXTON, C. | This is the second quarter of first-year Latin. We will continue to cover Wheelock's Latin textbook. Instruction and practice in grammar and vocabulary will alternate with the reading of Latin passages. Daily homework, weekly quiz, midterm exam, and a final examination. Prerequisite: Latin 1A, equivalent, or permission of instructor. This course may be used to satisfy the breadth requirement in language (VI) as well as the School of Humanities foreign language requirement. |
| LATIN 103 | CAESAR'S CIVIL WAR | ZISSOS, P. | In this course we will read a selection of episodes from the Civil War (Bellum Civile) of Julius Caesar, paying close attention to vocabulary, morphology, syntax, and, more generally, the various peculiarities and difficulties of reading Latin prose. We will identify and analyze the principal features of Caesar’s brilliant and lucid writing style. We will also consider the rhetorical and ideological thrust of the Bellum Civile, as well as, more broadly, the critical events in the fall of the Roman Republic that it narrates. (Prerequisite: Latin 100 or equivalent, or consent of the department. This course may be repeated for credit as topics vary.) |
