LATIN 104OVID'S METAMORPHOSEZISSOS, P.In this course we will read selections from the third book of Ovid’s
Metamorphoses, paying close attention to grammar, syntax, vocabulary
and, more generally, the various peculiarities and difficulties of
reading Latin poetry. We will also explore the rudiments of meter (like
most Roman epic, the Metamorphoses is written in hexameter verse), as
well as occasionally considering the literary tradition within which
Ovid was writing, and the enormous influence the Metamorphoses has had
on subsequent literature in nearly all periods through to our own.
(Prerequisite: Latin 100 or equivalent, or consent of the department.
This course may be repeated for credit as topics vary.)
