| LATIN 1B | FUNDAMENTALS | CLAXTON, C. | This is the second quarter of first-year Latin. We will continue to cover Shelmerdine's Introduction to Latin, textbook. Instruction and practice in grammar and vocabulary will alternate with the reading of Latin passages. Daily homework, weekly quiz, midterm exam, and a final examination. Prerequisite: Latin 1A, equivalent, or permission of instructor. This course may be used to satisfy the breadth requirement in language (VI) as well as the School of Humanities foreign language requirement. |
| LATIN 103 | PLINY | ZISSOS, P. | In this course we will read selections from the letters of Pliny the Younger (61-112 AD), with particular emphasis on accuracy of translation, understanding of grammar and syntax, and vocabulary building. As we read we will also consider the fascinating period in which Pliny was writing, and his value as a historical source for contemporary developments, including the eruption of Vesuvius, which resulted in Pompeii’s engulfment in volcanic ash, and the persecution of Christians in the early Roman Empire. (Prerequisite: Latin 100A or equivalent, or consent of the department. This course may be repeated for credit as topics vary.) |
