LATIN 104VIRGIL'S ECLOGUESSNYDER, R.Latin 104: VIRGIL'S ECLOGUES

The goal of Latin 104 is to improve your ability to read Latin poetry through a close study of Virgil’s Eclogues. The course will include reviews of morphological forms and grammar, but its main focus will be on reading Latin poetry as accurately and efficiently as possible. To help improve your understanding of poetry as a verbal art, you will also practice the scansion and recitation of Latin poetry. To provide a context for Virgil’s work, we will discuss social and political issues relevant to his time. As time allows, we will also address important influences on Virgil’s work, the broader literary environment in which he operated, and some of the ways in which his work has been received.
