| LATIN 104 | CATULLUS 64 | SNYDER, R. | This course seeks to improve a student’s ability to read Latin poetry through a close study of Catullus’ longest work, poem 64. The course will include reviews of morphological forms and grammar, but its focus will be on reading Latin poetry accurately and efficiently. We will discuss social and historical issues relevant to Catullus’ time, as well as the literary tropes and devices used in his work. To help improve our understanding of poetry as a verbal art, we will also discuss poetic meter and practice the scansion of Latin poetry. |
