LATIN 104AENEID ICLAXTON, C.Vergil's Aeneid has rightly been considered the pinnacle of Roman epic and is a "must-read" for all students of Latin. In this class, we will start at the beginning with Book One and will read this book in the original Latin. We will consider what makes an epic an epic, the differences between Vergil's work and the Homeric epics, and what makes this work uniquely Roman. We will also examine what modern commentators have said about the epic. To further this aim, weekly assignments will also include reading of selected articles and the entire epic in English. As we read the Latin text, close attention will be paid to grammatically accurate translation, the development of translation strategies, scansion, and vocabulary building. Weekly vocabulary quizzes, midterm, final examination, and oral presentation of an article. Prerequisite: Latin 100B or equivalent.
