In this course, students will focus on one of the three genres of rhetoric—forensic oratory. More specifically, students will read Lysias’ first oration, On the Murder of Eratosthenes. This speech presents the defense of one Euphiletus who has been charged with the premeditated murder of Eratosthenes, a man whom Euphiletus caught sleeping with his wife. Throughout the course of the quarter, students can expect regular translation assignments, (bi)weekly quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Lastly, students who have completed more than 2 years of Greek language study will be asked to complete a separate translation project. |
