Are you curious about why a single Greek text can produce so many different translations? If so, this course will help you to begin to understand the complexities of ancient Greek. In this course, we will cover the rudiments of Greek grammar, syntax and vocabulary and will translate simple passages and sentences. Greek 1A is the first quarter of a year long course dedicated to the study of beginning Greek. Weekly quizzes, midterm and a final examination. No prerequisites. Non-majors are most welcome. |
| GREEK 100A | GREEK PROSE | KARANIKA, A. | The aim of this course is to enhance our reading and understanding skills of ancient Greek prose while situating the text in its historical, literary, cultural and social context. We will read closely Lysias’ speech On the murder of Eratosthenes. Through this text we will do a review of Greek grammar, but also read and discuss scholarly work on classical oratory. Grade based on class participation, quizzes, a midterm and a final examination. |
