GREEK 1AFUNDAMENTALSCLAXTON, C.Greek 1A Have you ever wanted to read Homer or Sophocles or Plato in the original Greek? Are you curious about why a single Greek text can produce so many different translations? Do you want to improve your understanding of English grammar and syntax? Increase your English vocabulary? If so, this course is for you! This course will help you to begin to understand the complexities of ancient Greek and will improve your understanding of English at the same time. We will cover the rudiments of Greek grammar, syntax and vocabulary and will translate simple passages and sentences. Greek 1A is the first quarter of a year-long course dedicated to the study of beginning Classical Greek. Weekly quizzes, midterm and a final examination. No prerequisites. Non-majors are most welcome.

GREEK 100BGREEK POETRYCLAXTON, C.This course will provide an introduction to Greek poetry and we will read selections from Euripides' plays Iphigenia in Aulis and Iphigenia in Tauris. The focus will be on accurate translation and increasing vocabulary. We will also review the major topics of Greek grammar and syntax. Grammar quizzes, two midterms and final examination. Prerequisite: Greek 1C or equivalent, or consent of the Department. Non-majors are most welcome.
