| GREEK 104 | SELECTIONS/HOMER | KARANIKA, A. | The aim of this course is to enhance our reading skills of ancient Greek poetry while also interpreting one of the most important texts of World Literature. We will read closely the entire book 6, and selections from book 11 and 12 of Homer’s Odyssey. One of the most graceful episodes of the Odyssey is the encounter between Odysseus and Nausicaa in Book 6, the book that marks the beginning of the “real” Odyssey and that brings to focus Odysseus as a storyteller of his own adventures and a hero. In Book 6, past and present meet to prepare the future and final stages of the heroic homecoming. We will also read selected passages of Odysseus’ storytelling (from books 11 and 12). We will do a review of Greek grammar, with a focus on Homeric grammar and syntax but also read and discuss brief scholarly work on the Odyssey and epic oral tradition. |
