GREEK 1BFUNDAMENTALSCLAXTON, C.This course is a continuation of first-year Greek and we will complete another ten or so units of our beginning text book, Beginning Classical Greek. Strict attention will be paid to the mastery of forms and syntax and we will also increase our reading skills. Weekly quizzes, midterm and final examinations. Prerequisite: Greek 1A equivalent, or permission of instructor. This course may be used to satisfy the breadth requirement in language (VI) as well as the School of Humanities foreign language requirement.

GREEK 103GREEK ORATORSCLAXTON, C.After the end of the Peloponnesian War in 404 BCE, Athens was ruled by a brief and brutal oligarchy known as "The Thirty Tyrants" which lasted about fourteen months. In this class, we will explore one of the primary sources for this time period in Athenian history by reading Lysias XII, Against Eratosthenes which concerns the murder of Lysias' brother Polemarchos by The Thirty. Other relevant primary sources will be read in English. Special attention will be paid to accurate grammatical understanding, increasing vocabulary and the speed of reading as well as to the historical details of these events. Weekly quizzes, midterm, final examination and possible oral presentation or translation project. Prerequisite: Greek 100A or equivalent, or consent of the instructor.
