| GREEK 1B | FUNDAMENTALS | CLAXTON, C. | This course is a continuation of first-year Greek and we will complete another twenty or so chapters of our beginning textbook, Introduction to Attic Greek by Donald Mastronarde. Strict attention will be paid to the mastery of forms and syntax and we will also increase our reading skills. Weekly quizzes, midterm and final examinations. Prerequisite: Greek 1A, equivalent, or permission of instructor. This course may be used to satisfy the breadth requirement in language (VI) as well as the School of Humanities\' foreign language requirement. |
| GREEK 97 | FUNDAMENTALS OF READING | GOLDMAN, M. | This course is an intensive Greek class designed for those students who need to learn ancient Greek quickly in order to use it for research purposes. The course will include an introduction to the basic grammar of Greek and will focus upon acquiring reading skills. Open to graduate and undergraduate students, but not open to Classics majors or minors or Greek minors. Course does not fulfill the undergraduate language requirement. | GREEK 103 | GREEK HISTORIANS | CLAXTON, C. | This class will read selections from Xenophon\'s account of the fall of Athens at the end of the Peloponnesian War and from book 1 of Thucydides\' History of the Peloponnesian War. Special attention will be paid to accurate translation and grammatical understanding. We will also look at these writings as examples of Greek historical writing and will consider how the authors went about writing history. Weekly vocabulary quizzes, two midterm exams, translation project and final exam. Prerequisite: Greek 100A. This course will satisfy the VII-B breadth requirement. |
