GREEK 104HOMERKARANIKA, A.The aim of this course is to enhance our reading skills of ancient Greek poetry while also interpreting one of the most important texts of World Literature. We will read closely the entire book 6 of Homer's Odyssey and selections from books 11 and 12. One of the most graceful episodes of the Odyssey is the encounter between Odysseus and Nausicaa in Book 6, the book that marks the beginning of the “real” Odyssey and that brings to focus Odysseus as a story teller of his own adventures and a hero. In Book 6, past and present meet to prepare for the future and final stages of the heroic homecoming. We will do a review of Greek grammar, with a focus on Homeric grammar and syntax, but also read and discuss brief scholarly work on the Odyssey and epic oral tradition.
