GREEK 104PHILOCTETESCLAXTON, C.This upper-division language course will focus upon a close reading of the Philoctetes by the great Athenian tragedian Sophocles. We will emphasize accurate translation and grammatical understanding, but will also seek to translate the Greek in a more fluid and perhaps even poetic fashion! We will discuss the context of the play, underlying themes, and the role of the various characters. Weekly vocabulary quizzes, translation project, midterm and final exams.
