GREEK 1CFUNDAMENTALSCLAXTON, C.In this final quarter of beginning Classical Greek, we will complete the remaining chapters our textbook. We will also read selected passages from various authors, including Aesop, Xenophon, and Herodotus. Weekly quizzes, midterm, and final examination. Prerequisite: Greek 1B or equivalent.
GREEK 103GREEK PROSE: HISTORIES OF HERODOTUSCLAXTON, C.Herodotus has been called the 'Father of History' as well as the 'Father of Lies' and in this class, we will examine the validity of both claims as we read selected portions of his Histories in the original Greek. We will examine the way Herodotus viewed the writing of history and determine what he thought was important to include, how he presented the results of his researches, and compare this with what we, as moderns, think of as history. To further this aim, weekly assignments will also include reading of selected articles. As we read Herodotus' text, close attention will be paid to grammatically accurate translation, the development of translation strategies, and vocabulary building. Weekly quizzes, midterm, final examination, and possible oral presentation or project. Prerequisite: Greek 100A or equivalent.
