The event will feature a talk by Dr. Inés Pérez: "THEFT, CONSUMPTION AND GENDER IN DOMESTIC SERVICE (MAR DEL PLATA, 1950-1980)". Comments by Professor Heidi Tinsman and PhD Candidate Javiera Letelier, UCI Department of History.Inés Pérez is an Argentine feminist historian and a prominent scholar. Dr Pérez is Ph.D. in Social Sciences and Humanities, and Sociology. She teaches at the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata and is a researcher at the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, both in Argentina. Dr Pérez is an expert in the history of consumption and gender in Latin America during the twentieth century; she is the author of the book El hogar tecnificado. Familias, género y vida cotidiana (1940-1970) and co-author of the books Gênero e consumo: represntaçoes midiáticas de práticas de consumo no espaço doméstico (Argentina e Brasil no século XX) and Senderos que se bifurcan. Servicio doméstico y derechos laborales en la Argentina del siglo XX. Together with her other publications about domestic life, motherhood, domestic workers, and family, her scholarship has established her reputation as one of leading feminist historians in Latin America.
Heidi Tinsman is Professor of History and Department Chair. Her publications include Buying into the Regime: Consumption and Grapes in Cold War Chile and the United States.
Javiera Letelier is a PhD. candidate in the UCI History Department. Her dissertation is entitled: Gender and Consumption in Chile 1959 – 1973. The Promotion, Sale, and Acquisition of Household Appliances.
