| Freedom and Liberation EURO ST 200A Should there be limits to the pursuit of freedom and liberation? Ideas of freedom and liberation have been probed and contested throughout modern European history. From nationalist movements to anti-colonial liberation struggles, from the demands of freedom of conscience and freedom of speech to battles against cultural and religious censorship, new answers to the question What is freedom? have defined and redefined a wide variety of cultural and political identities in Europe. Questions of liberty and freedom inform how different European traditions think about protest, resistance, civil disobedience, and the use and abuse of violence as a political means. In this course we will discuss how European activists and artists, theorists and politicians from John Stuart Mill to Marx, from Cervantes to Shalamov, from Fanon to Arendt have changed our understanding of what it might mean to be free. Again and again, a gap opened up between the theory of freedom and the practices and the aftermath of liberation movements. Who were the subjects and agents in these narratives of liberation (working class, women, minorities, dissidents)? What tactics were proposed, used, or decried? Taking our examples from the rich and varied history of modern Europe, we will explore how revolutionary (and anti-revolutionary) narratives of freedom have shaped European politics, literature, art, and film. | ||
