| KOREAN 1B | FUNDAMENTALS | STAFF | The objective of Korean 1A-B-C is to guide students in developing Facility in basic Korean. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of written and spoken Korean language. Two textbooks (Korean 1 & practice book : Language Education Institute, Seoul National University) will be used throughout the year. The main textbook aims to develop students’ basic communicative skills in practical, everyday situations whereas the practice book intends to be used in conjunction with the main textbook to complement and to strengthen the acquired vocabulary and grammar in all four areas : listening, speaking, reading and writing. Upon completion of this course students are expected to acquire basic comprehension ability, expanded vocabulary, grammatical patterns and sentence structures, so that they have fundamental command of Korean in speaking, reading and writing, Students will be given two tests and an oral and written final tests. Prerequisite: Korean 1A or equivalent. |
| KOREAN 2B | INTERMEDIATE | LEE, J. | In Korean 2A-B-C series, students are assumed to have previous knowledge of Korean taught in Korean 1A-B-C series. Students in this course will learn further intermediate level skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Korean. Two textbooks will be used throughout the year (Korean 2 & practice book : Language Education Institute, Seoul National University). Some basic Chinese characters are also introduced. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to acquire further comprehension ability, expanded vocabulary, more complicated grammatical patterns and sentence structures. The students have good command of Korean in speaking, reading and writing. Prerequisite: Korean 2A or equivalent. Two tests and Final (oral and written). |
| KOREAN 3B | ADVANCED | STAFF | The objective of Korean 3A-B-C is continues to introduce students to the Korean language with more advanced structures and vocabulary which are presented within the context of the Korean society. Because of the nature of the language, students will constantly be reviewing structures learned in previous Korean classes. Students are guided in the development of the four language learning skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will continue to develop an appreciation and understanding of the Korean culture and its varied traditions and histories, particularly through classroom discussion and extra reading materials. Students will be given two tests and a written final test.

| KOREAN 101B | FOURTH YEAR | HYUN, H. | The fourth year Korean course 101B helps students improve language skills, especially in reading through a literary approach. Short stories by modern Korean writers are selected to serve as primary texts. In reading these texts the emphasis will be on comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary, meanwhile abilities to interpret and analyze literary representations will be given equal attention. Improving reading abilities, students will be required to participate in a series of oral presentations and to write two essays in order to improve their language skills as a whole. Prerequisite: Korean 3C or equivalent. |
| KOREAN 115 | CONTEMPORARY KOREAN FILMS & NARRATIVES | CHOI, C. | In this course we will read, view, and examine themes and compare styles of the contemporary Korean films and short narratives in the original language. We will analyze some of the representative films and short stories that address emerging cultural issues in the Korean society today. The topics include economic development, violence, and the question of forgiveness; issues of gender and marriage; feminism and beauty industry.
