| KOREAN 1A | FUNDAMENTALS KOREAN | STAFF | The objective of Korean 1A-B-C is to guide students in developing basic Korean language skills. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of written and spoken Korean language. Two textbooks (Korean 1 & practice book : Language Education Institute, Seoul National University) will be used throughout the year. The main textbook aims to develop students’ basic communicative skills in practical, everyday situations whereas the practice book intends to be used in conjunction with the main textbook to complement and to strengthen the acquired vocabulary and grammar in all four areas : listening, speaking, reading and writing. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to acquire basic comprehension ability, expanded vocabulary, basic grammatical patterns and sentence structures. 2 Tests and Final (oral and written). A class for non-heritage learners is opened throughout the year. |
| KOREAN 2A | INTERMEDIATE KOREAN | STAFF | In Korean 2A-B-C series, students are assumed to have previous knowledge of Korean taught in Korean 1A-B-C series. Students in this course will learn further intermediate level skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Korean. Two textbooks will be used throughout the year (Korean 2 & practice book : Language Education Institute, Seoul National University). Some basic Chinese characters are also introduced. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to acquire further comprehension ability, expanded vocabulary, more complicated grammatical patterns and sentence structures. The students have good command of Korean in speaking, reading and writing. Prerequisite: Korean 1C or equivalent. 2 Tests and Final (oral and written). A class for non-heritage learners is opened throughout the year. |
| KOREAN 3A | ADVANCED KOREAN | HYUN, H. | In Korean 3A-3B-3C series, students learn more advanced levels of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Korean. Students in these courses are assumed to have previous knowledge of Korean 2 taught in Korean 2A through 2C. The focus will be on advanced grammatical patterns and points toward more complicated sentence structures. More advanced Chinese characters are introduced. Students will read a variety of texts such as modern Korean short stories and write on various topics related to the reading. In doing so, they will learn more about Korean culture, history, and society while learning the language and different forms of literature. Prerequisite: Korean 2C or equivalent. 2 Tests and Final (oral and written). |

| KOREAN 115 | CONTEMPORARY KOREAN POP NARRATIVE & FILM | CHOI, C. | In this course we will read, view, and examine themes and compare styles of the contemporary Korean popular narratives and their cinematic renditions in the original language. We will select some of the popular novels and films that address emerging cultural issues of the contemporary Korean society. The topics include gendered authority and violence, capitalistic development and colonial nostalgia, love, marriage, and
feminism.
