KOREAN 1BFUNDAMENTALSSTAFFThe objective of Korean 1A-B-C is to guide students in developing basic Korean language skills. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of written and spoken Korean language. Two textbooks will be used throughout the year. The Korean Conversation book focuses on the colloquial form of daily conversation whereas the course packet focuses on the written style and grammar of Korean. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to acquire basic comprehension ability, expanded vocabulary, basic grammatical patterns and sentence structures. The students also can utilize fundamental commands of Korean in listening and speaking, reading and writing. Prerequisite: Korean 1A or equivalent. 3Tests and Final (oral and written).
KOREAN 2BINTERMEDIATECHOE, H.In Korean 2A-B-C series, students are assumed to have previous knowledge of Korean taught in Korean 1A-B-C series. Students in this course will learn further intermediate level skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Korean. Some basic Chinese characters are also introduced. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to acquire further comprehension ability, expanded vocabulary, more complicated grammatical patterns and sentence structures. The students have good command of Korean in speaking, reading and writing. Prerequisite: Korean 2A or equivalent. 3 Tests and Final (oral and written).
KOREAN 3BADVANCEDCHOE, H.In Korean 3A-3B-3C series, students learn more advanced level of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Korean. Students in these courses are assumed to have previous knowledge of Korean 2 taught in Korean 2A through 2C. The focus will be on advanced grammatical patterns and points towards more complicated sentence structures. More advanced Chinese characters are introduced. Students will read a variety of texts and write on various topics related to the reading. In doing so, they will learn more about Korean culture, history, and society while learning the language and different forms of literature. Prerequisite: Korean 3A or equivalent. 3 Tests and Final (oral and written).
KOREAN 101BFOURTH YEARCHOI, C.Continued emphasis on comprehension, grammar, and proficiency in reading, composition, and conversation through intensive study and analysis of a variety of modern texts. Prerequisite: Korean 3C
KOREAN 115MODERN KOREAN LITKIM, U.Reading of selected short stories by representative modern Korean writers, written from the 1920’s through the 1960’s. There will be explication de texte but also attempts to read these stories as reflecting modern Korean history as Korea had to contend with disorders and dislocations of colonialism and wars, on the one hand, and the challenge of modernity, on the other, to invent new habits of mind and new forms of expression. Two papers will be required in lieu of the mid-term and the final examinations. 1) The mid-term paper will be a short paper, of about five pages, containing synopses of five stories from the textbooks. 2) The final term paper will be an evaluative essay of ten pages on five writers, based on your reading of the short stories in the texts. You are advised to select your writers chronologically so that changes over time in themes and techniques may be illustrated
