Graduate Learning Community

Meet Nathan Allison, a Ph.D. candidate in English and the 2021-2022 facilitator for the School of Humanities Graduate Learning Community.

Nathan Allison is a PhD candidate in English at the University of California, Irvine. His dissertation, “Pragmatic Adaptations, or, ‘The Drama of Determinism’: The Evolution of Naturalism in Fiction and Social Thought,” reconsiders the legacy of literary naturalism to address questions about agency, determination, and artistic legitimacy in an age defined by the dominance of the social sciences. He is currently a Dean’s Fellow in UCI’s School of Humanities, a Pedagogical Fellow in UCI’s Division of Teaching Excellence, a Mentor in UCI’s Grad/Undergrad Mentoring Program, and the facilitator of the School of Humanities Graduate Student Learning Community on Teaching. In his free time, he enjoys running, watching movies and tv, and spending time with his wife, Catie, and his toy poodle, ZuZu. His most fundamental belief about the world is that all tv shows need theme songs.
