Undergraduate Life

All Spanish majors are taught by professors from the Spanish and Portuguese department or by faculty invited to teach in Spanish from other departments at UCI.

Spanish students have plenty of opportunities for improving their Spanish and socializing with faculty and fellow graduate and undergraduate students outside the class-room. The national honor society Sigma Delta Pi holds regular tutoring sections for students looking to improve their language skills. Spanish TAs (graduate students working in the language program) organize tertulias which are open to all undergraduate students. Once a quarter, the Spanish department organizes a free lunch for majors which is also attended by faculty and graduate students. Undergraduate students vigorously participates in the yearly Latin American Film Festival as well as in the Film Forum. Students may petition to join the Spanish Honor Language Society Sigma Delta Pi. Graduating students intending to continue into graduate studies attend a special session on "how to apply to graduate programs," which is run by our faculty every Fall. Finally, the Spanish department honors the top students of the major with a prize consisting in a money order valid for purchases at the UC Bookstore.
