Conference on Mexican Studies

Every year the Spanish department at UCI holds the Juan Bruce Novoa Conference on Mexican Studies. Over its more than twenty editions, the conference has become a meeting point of scholars and graduate students devoted to the study of Mexican culture. The conference boasts an array of prominent keynote speakers, which in the recent years has included Juan Villoro, Jean Franco, Cristina Rivera Garza, Federico Campbell, Myriam Moscona, Graciela Iturbide y Margo Glantz among others. Distinguished Speaker Series 

Eduardo Lao

The Distinguished Speaker Series brings to UCI the most prominent names in Spanish and Latin American scholarship and cultural life. Previous speakers includes Claudio Lomnitz (Anthropology, Columbia),  Angel Loureiro (Spanish, Princeton), Rafael Rojas (Cide-Mexico), Juan Ramón Resina (Iberian and Latin American Cultures, Stanford). In Fall 2015 we will receive the visit of Professor Jo Labanyi (Spanish-New York University) followed in Winter 2016 by the visit of art critic and Paraguayan cultural personality Ticio Escobar.  For information on the distinguished speaker series contact Horacio Legras (hlegras@uci.edu).

Every quarter the department invites two scholars to share their research with faculty and graduate students. Scholars in residence

 A number of international scholars stay at UCI sponsored by our department. While a stay in Southern California facilitates their research, their presence at UCI is an important enrichment of our cultural life. Recent visitors include Lorena Amaro (Universidad Católica, Chile), Claudio Guerrero Valenzuela (Universidad Católica Valparaiso, Chile), Denise Leon (Conicet Argentina), Brigitte Adriaensen (Radboud University, Netherlands), and Miguel Gutiérrez Mate (Universidad Complutense, Madrid). The scholar in residence for Fall 2015 is Graciela Maglia Ferrari (Universidad Javeriana. Colombia).
