Faculty Grants
As part of its mission to spark new knowledge, foster vibrant intellectual communities, and ignite conversations that matter, the Humanities Center awards grants to School of Humanities faculty and graduate students to support research, conference travel, publication subvention and conference planning. Grants are awarded twice a year in fall and spring quarters. The Humanities Center's internal grant streams are funded through the Academic Senate (CORCL), the UCI Office of Research, and the UC Humanities Network.If you have questions about faculty grants, contact Amanda Swain at ajswain@uci.edu. Our Conversations that Matter theme for 2021-2022 is "To Form a More Perfect Union?". The Humanities Center will provide co-sponsorship funding for events by organized by departments, centers, research clusters and other faculty-led groups on the theme that take place in Winter and Spring quarters 2022. Faculty Grants
1) Collaborative Conference Grants (CLOSED) - Deadline: 11/1/2021
Description
Centers and research clusters supported by the Humanities Center may apply for $1,500.
Other faculty collaborations may apply for up to $2,000.
Collaborative Conference grants support academic conferences, symposia or colloquia held at UCI. These grants may also support a series of events with a unifying theme during a quarter or the academic year. A collaborative project must have at least two (2) co-directors, with the lead co-director from the School of Humanities. Collaboration with external partners, such as other universities or organizations, on virtual events is encouraged.
Grants are available for 2021-2022 events. All events must comply with UCI COVID-19 directives and policies current at the time, as well as any School of Humanities guidelines.
Timeline:
o Notifications by December 3, 2021
o Funds must be expended by June 30, 2022
Applications must be submitted electronically by Monday, November 1, 11:00 p.m.

• A description of the conference or scholar series, its contribution to scholarship in this field/on this topic, and a list of key participants.
• A detailed budget for the conference
• A list of other conference sponsors and sources of funding.

Eligibility
Eligibility to be lead co-director:
o Faculty with primary appointment in a School of Humanities department.
o A current School of Humanities lecturer or visiting faculty member who has demonstrated a commitment to fostering research on campus.
o Humanities Faculty Fellows and postdoctoral scholars in the School of Humanities.
Applicants must have a department or center commitment to provide support organizing the events. The Humanities Center does not provide program or administrative support along with grant funds

2) Dean’s Mid-Career Manuscript Workshops (CLOSED) - Deadline: 1/31/2020
Description
The purpose of the one-day manuscript workshop is to provide mid-career UCI Humanities faculty with substantive and constructive feedback from scholars in the field on a substantial draft of a second book manuscript in preparation for submission to a publisher for a contract or for publication. The grant is intended to fund travel expenses, lodging and honoraria for 2-3 invited scholars, as well as meals and refreshments during the workshop. The workshop itself is limited to the faculty member, invited scholars, and up to 2 other guests whom the faculty member would like to include. The maximum amount for the manuscript workshop is $5,000. Faculty recipients must be prepared to submit a substantial draft of a book manuscript two months before the workshop (e.g., January 15, 2021, for a March 15, 2021 workshop).
Timeline
o Notifications by April 1, 2020.
o Manuscript workshop will be held in 2020-2021.

The workshops may be organized by the home department or by the Humanities Center.

o Name, Department and Year promoted to associate professor
o Names and affiliations of 5-6 proposed scholars and editors from California and the United States and their contact information, with the aim of bringing to campus 2-3 invited scholars for the workshop
Upload a single PDF with a narrative description of the second book project (1,000-2,000 words), a timeline indicating what has been written and what will be submitted for discussion, and plans for publication (any initial contacts with a publisher, preliminary contract, etc.).
Click “Save” to save your submission and review or complete at a later date.
Once you have completed your online application form, click “Submit Responses” to submit the application. Application forms cannot be changed once they have been submitted.

3) Faculty Conference Travel (OPEN) - Deadline: 1/31/2022
Description
Total Combined Conference Travel Request : $2,000
Conference Travel Grant guidelines (PDF)
Grant funds may be used towards conference registration, travel expenses, lodging at the conference, and conference meals if they are part of the official program. They may not be used for meals while traveling or per diem while attending the conference. Preferences: junior and mid-career scholars attending national or major association conferences to advance their research agenda; senior scholars engaged in a new research trajectory attending conferences specific to a new field or who are serving in governance capacity with the scholarly association sponsoring the conference. Faculty giving presentations will receive priority over those serving as chairs or discussants.
Faculty may request up to $2,000 combined total for reimbursement for conferences attended since July 1, 2021 or for upcoming conferences in 2022. Conferences prior to July 1, 2021 are not eligible for reimbursement.
COVID-19 Note: Due to the new environment created by the COVID pandemic, CORCL allows faculty to request reimbursement for the following:
o fees paid by their graduate students for participating to online conferences.
o faculty membership dues necessary to attend a conference.
For applications submitted at the January deadline:
o Notifications by February 28, 2021
o Funds must be expended by December 31, 2022

4) Faculty Research (OPEN) - Deadline: 1/31/2022

Faculty Research Grants support expenses related to scholarly research projects, including flights, ground transportation and lodging for research travel; archival and copying fees; the purchase of supplies directly related to the project; translation and transcription of research materials; and research assistants, including GSR stipends. For collaborative research projects between SOH faculty and faculty from other UCI Schools or universities, grant funds may only be applied to SOH faculty expenses. Collaborative research projects are expected to produce a joint scholarly product.
Research cannot be used for travel to conferences, food expenses or per diem during travel or for the purchase of computers, or other devices. Apply separately for Conference Travel and Computing grants.
COVID-19 Note: Due to the new environment created by the COVID pandemic, CORCL has approved the use of research funds for the following alternative uses related to their research.
IMPORTANT: Academic faculty must make the request for funding any of these expenses for graduate students or UCI affiliates (such as lecturers, visiting scholars or postdocs).
o Equipment for faculty and their graduate students to better host hybrid (in-person & virtual) events e.g., green screens, lighting, microphones, headphones, etc.
o Payment of online services to facilitate online research activities, e.g., for the purchase of extended Zoom Webinar plans, or premium plans to facilitate teamworking in the digital age (e.g., Slack).
o Honoraria for invited online speakers
o Staffing and services to assist with hybrid events
o Upgraded and/or subsidized internet connectivity e.g., for the purchase of mobile hotspots
o Ergonomic office furniture and computing devices for faculty and graduate students, and any solution that may be used to improve the health and safety of online work
o Requests that are meant to promote diversity and may facilitate removing barriers that affect a faculty ability to conduct their work, e.g., supplemental funding for childcare or school costs; organizations of activities to promote diversity awareness and inclusiveness.
o Publication fees for open-access journals, according to the policies of the UCI Library
o Travel expenses for scholarly research including reimbursements for out-of-pocket expenses for UCI affiliates.

Eligibility
Academic Senate faculty with an appointment in the UCI School of Humanities are eligible to apply for faculty research grants through the Humanities Commons. Faculty research grants are awarded from funds allocated to the School of Humanities from the Academic Senate’s Committee on Research, Computing and Libraries. The committee will take into consideration evidence of effective use of previous grants as demonstrated in final reports from previous grants.

5) Publication Support (CLOSED) - Deadline: 11/1/2021
Description
Publication support grants of up to $2,000 will be awarded for monographs, edited volumes and articles under contract with a publisher. Grant funds may be used as a subvention to the publisher or for expenses related to preparing the manuscript such as image rights, copy-editing and/or indexing.
Exceptional requests for support above $2,000 will be considered for funding through the Dean’s research initiative for permissions expenses only related to monograph and article publication.

Grant Payments: Publication subvention grants will be paid directly to the press. Grant funds for publication expenses incurred directly will be reimbursed. All expenses should be processed through the recipient’s home department.
