The Little Match Girl (2017)

Co-sponsored by Latin American Studies Center, Humanities Commons and Illuminations.

Part of the Latin American Studies in Motion film series organized by the Latin American Studies Center.

This film was born from the documentary recordings of a rehearsal process, which took the shape of a diary. The particular object that is being registered (a modernist composer trying to push forward an arid and impossible piece of music inside of an orchestra convulsed by union demands), is the heart of a film which assembles around that core like a set of Russian dolls.

From that documentary diary, some characters are extracted and a fictional film is created between them and three actors. Afterwards, that fiction returns to a documentary register through  the hand of the great pianist Margarita Fernandez. This coming and going will always be guided by the same themes (like a sonata and its infinite variations), which are the links between art, radicalism, money, work and even love.

It is evident that this film is a part of a bigger group of films that walk the thin line between fiction and documentary, just like my previous films (The parrot and the swan, The gold bug and my future film For the money, which will be shot in 2018). It is also true that all these films share the same themes: the artists, cultural policies, unionization of artistic works, artists' ethical values, the limits of culture, the process of artistic creation.

Director: Alejo Moguillansky's films have been shown in festivals at Locarno, Berlin, Viennale, and London among other festivals. He has won the award for the best Argentina film (Premio a Mejor PeliÌcula Argentina) in BAFICI (Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente) three times with Castro (2009) y El escarabajo de oro/The Gold Bug (2014) and La vendedora de foÌsforo/The Little Match Girl (2017). In 2017 he was also the filmmaker chosen to represent Argentina at the Feria Arco in Madrid with a retrospective of all his films. Together with Mariano LlinaÌs, Laura Citarella and AgustiÌn Mendilaharzu he is the founder of the independent film producer El Pampero Cine. Presently he is filming a documentary on Helmut Lachenmann and Margarita Fernández, and preparing his next film Por El Dinero/For the Money, based on a documentary theatre piece he staged in 2013 with Argentinean choreographer Luciana Acuña.
