A Symposium on Vico - The Past of the Future

 Humanities Center     Feb 8 2019 | 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM HIB 135

Please join us for a graduate student symposium on the afterlives of the famous eighteenth-century philosopher and cultural theorist, Giambattista Vico, whose work mightily influenced some of the most important philosophers and political theorists of the modern age, from Marx to T.W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, and beyond. Vico’s “counter-Enlightenment” understanding of history is particularly relevant for today’s world as we seek to understand if what we thought was “progress” has turned out to be so progressive after all.  Dr. Martin Jay, Ehrman Professor of European History Emeritus at UC Berkeley, will serve as respondent to presentations by UCI graduate students from comparative literature, English, German studies, and studio art.
