Longitude

Longitude is a devised theater performance about 18th century inventor/clockmaker John Harrison, and his entry into the most important race of the century: to discover a means of measuring longitude at sea.  6 physical actors portray all the characters in the story from Galileo to King George III  to The Man Who Knows Everything;  as well as storms at sea, the celestial heavens, maritime clocks, and Harrison’s inspiration/muse.

CounterBalance Theater’s  mission is to “to create physical theater based on great literature.” CounterBalance has constructed locally and in Europe, and toured productions using 6-8 transforming performers who play the characters, architecture, furniture and forces of nature in each production.   Productions of Jane Eyre, Par Lagerkvist’s The Dwarf, The Odyssey, The Iliad, and Elsewhere, inspired by Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, have received public acclaim “Best Ensemble 2013” , “Best Director” 2014”  LA Arts Examiner, “Vibrant and exhilaratingly alive”, OC Weekly; “Jane Eyre gets a whole new spin” St Louis Post Dispatch.  Artistic Director, Annie Loui, brings her dance and mime training in Paris to the devising process, as well as her wealth of experiences choreographing for the American Repertory Theater, Signature Theater and the Orchestra of St Lukes (NYC). 

CounterBalance is in residence in the Grotowski Barn at the University of California, Irvine.
