Working in Journalism: Four Paths Through a Fast-Changing Landscape

This roundtable will feature four journalists--Jennifer Schuessler, Angilee Shah, Melissa Chan, and Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow--who between them have written for newspapers, magazines, journals of opinion, and literary reviews and in some cases also covered the news for radio and television.  They will talk about the different sorts of work they do, how they ended up doing it, and where they see journalism heading.  Historian and freelance writer Jeffrey Wasserstrom of UCI’s Forum for the Academy and the Public will moderate.

Jennifer Schuessler has worked as an editor at the New York Review of Books, the Boston Globe and later the New York Times and is now a reporter for that newspaper covering ideas and intellectual life.

Angilee Shah co-edited the book Chinese Characters (California 2012) and works as a digital editor for Global Nation, the immigration desk at Public Radio International.

Melissa Chan is a former broadcast and multimedia journalist with Al Jazeera who is now freelancing.

Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow is a UCI writer-in-residence and author of a forthcoming book on the Walkman.
