Mellon Sawyer Seminar Fall 2016 Events start November 9th

"Documenting War" explores the genres, rhetoric, and effects of wartime documentation and postwar reflection, as carried out by journalists, soldiers, civilians, and artists. The seminar brings together academics, journalists and military personnel for lively conversations in which prejudices can be exposed and new resources for understanding tested.

October 14 from 2:00–5:00pm: "Japanese American Internment in Visual Culture" with Shipu wang, Jason Weems, and Amy Lyford in Humanities Gateway 1030
October 20 from 11:00am–12:20pm: "Photographing War" with Luis Sinco, Los Angeles Times in Humanities Gateway 1030
November 10 from 11:00am–12:20pm: " Panel with Gary Knight, Tim McLaughlin and Peter Maass in Humanities Gateway 1030
November 30 from 6:00–8:00pm: David Morris, author of "The Evil Hours", on PTSD in Humanities Gateway 1030
"Documenting War: The Sawyer Seminar" is directed by Professors Carol Burke and Cécile Whiting and supported by a generous grant from the Mellon Foundation. On-campus partners include Asian American Studies, the Southeast Asian Archive, and Illuminations.
