HOMESCAPES/WARSCAPES SERIES: We Are Here: Vietnamese American Identity and Memory

 Asian American Studies     Nov 10 2016 | 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM UCI, Humanities Hall 143

This multi-media and interactive workshop explores the work and life of artist
Trinh Mai. She will share the power of story-telling and memory through artist
representations of the past and present. In particular, she will focus on the
importance of the Vietnamese diaspora in shaping the lives and identities of
Vietnamese Americans.
Trinh Mai’s current work embraces her heritage and aims to excavate her roots
and the path which her ancestors have paved to allow her to be where and who
she is. Through traditional imagery and symbolism, in both abstract and literal
representations, she seeks to clarify the connection she has to her ancestors, the world
from which they came, and how this has molded the way she views the world. As a
second generation Vietnamese American, art has become the valuable tool that has
granted her the chance to live the immigrant experience vicariously through the elders,
allowing her to interpret these stories through her own ears, eyes and hands.
