Dr. Ian Read is Associate Professor of Latin American Studies at Soka University. He is the author of The Hierarchies of Slavery in Santos, Brazil, 1822-1888, published by Stanford University Press in 2012. He has published book chapters and articles on the history of slavery, medicine and disease, commodity chains, and digital humanities in collective volumes as well as in the Journal of Social History, Latin American Perspectives, and Slavery and Abolition.
