Elsewhere by CounterBalance Theater

 Humanities Center     Oct 31 2015 | 8:00 PM - 11:30 PM Tamkin Hall

Elsewhere
is a physical theatre production inspired by futuristic novels  about bio-ethics, that will be constructed and performed at UCI in Fall 2015 with post-show discussions with the director and medical ethics experts. (LINK to UCI Illuminations page).

Elsewhere is supported by a grant from the Medical Humanities Initiative, a provost-sponsored collaborative effort by faculty from the schools of the Arts, Humanities, and Medicine to build a nationally distinctive and innovative inter-school program in medical humanities.

5 actors playing 100 characters, the architecture and the furniture, tell the story of a normal girl in a British boarding school where nothing is what it seems: genetic engineering, medical ethics and the human tendency to follow the status quo, are explored in this CounterBalance Theater creation.

The story takes place in a contemporary/ futuristic world in which human clones are genetically engineered and then raised to become organ donors.  In accordance with the objectives of the UCI Medical Humanities Initiative, Elsewhere is a story interrogating medical ethics within the construct of human life- the definition of what constitutes a “human being.”

This latest work from CounterBalance Theater nicely intersects with the agenda of the Medical Humanities Initiative to explore use of the arts to further explicate issues that affect our society profoundly.  CounterBalance’s  mission is “to construct physical theater based on great literature”.
