Who disrupts whom?
The Digital Humanities as a contact zone

Monday, February 23, 12:00-1:30 PM
1341 Humanities Gateway

At the MLA conference in January 2015, a new initiative called Disrupting the Digital Humanities was launched. It aims to disrupt the digital humanities through a number of means including inserting gender, race, disability and global praxis. In this 30-minute reflection on the digital humanities - a starting-point for a discussion - Patrik Svensson will question who is the disrupter and who disrupts and what the place and value of the digital humanities is in the context of contemporary humanities. He argues that the digital humanities is best placed in-between disciplinary questions and technological-material structures and manifestations. HUMlab at Umeå University will be used as a case study.

Patrik Svensson is a professor in the Humanities and information technology, Umeå University. During 2000 - July 2014 he was the director of HUMlab. His current research spans information technology and learning, research infrastructure, screen cultures and the digital humanities as an emerging field. He is currently heavily involved in Umeå University’s new Arts Campus and the creation of a new platform for digital media, culture and representation: HUMlab-X. Another prioritized area at this point is strengthening strategic collaboration with selected national and international partners.

Lunch will be served. RSVP to mmaasz@uci.edu
