"that telephonic thing, or: i is/am somewhere in between"
Talk by Litia Perta (Assistant Professor of Art, UCI)
with a response by Jess Ziegenfuss (VS student), followed by Q&A
In artist Wu Tsang's most recent piece, Miss Communication and Mr: Re
(2014), collaborator Fred Moten utters the words: "my messages were
meant for your messages." What is it to be beings at the telephone,
constantly crafting, sending and receiving messages? And what might it
mean to depend upon the distance-voice in order to fully be? How does
being manifest in, relate to and depend upon "performance," both
artistically and socially? These questions will be examined through the
lens of a forthcoming exhibition entitled Double Life, curated by Dean
Daderko for the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (December 13,
2014-March 15, 2015). Through considerations of work by Tsang, Jérôme
Bel, and Haegue Yang, we will consider the fluid structures of selfhood
in and across space and time-- and the ways in which we find ourselves
on the line, and in between.
