Campaigning for Women’s Rights: Feminism, Islam, and Legal Reform in Iran - Dr. Catherine Sameh

 Gender and Sexuality Studies     Mar 11 2014 | 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM Humanities Gateway 1030

This talk examines an innovative campaign begun in 2006 among women’s rights activists in Iran and the diaspora to reform Iran’s discriminatory legal structure. It investigates the campaign’s discourses, strategies, and practices, including the deployment of new media technologies, as well as the creation of transnational networks. Reflecting on the relationship between activists, citizens, and the state, and the complex interplay between the local and global, this presentation illuminates the emergence and contours of new social movements.

Dr. Sameh received her PhD in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University. She is currently the Associate Director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women at Barnard College.
