Phenomenologies of Confession in Hamlet

Matthew Smith is Assistant Professor of English at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles,. He has published on Shakespeare’s Henry V, Hamlet, the plays of Philip Massinger, and the phenomenology of Donne’s sermons. His work has appeared in SEL, ELR, Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England, The Return of Theory in Early Modern English Studies, vol 2 (Palgrave), and the MLA Approaches to Teaching Shakespeare’s Histories. He is completing a book manuscript, called "Stage, Cathedral, Wagon, Street: The Grounds of Belief in Renaissance Performance." His doctoral dissertation, “The Grounds of Belief,” won the 2012 J. Leeds Barroll Dissertation Award from the Shakespeare Association of America and has also been the recipient of awards from the Renaissance Society of America and the Huntington Library Early Modern Studies Institute. Matthew has begun work on a second book called “The Metaphysics of Personhood in Renaissance Theater.”
