A FILM FORUM Session in collaboration with the Sigma Delta Pi National Spanish Honors Society and Spanish 110A and Spanish 220 The Women Directors Series Icíar Bollaín KATHMANDU (Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo)

 Spanish and Portuguese     Jan 28 2014 | 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Humanities Hall 254

Icíar Bollaín is one of the leading directors in Spain today. Her films are
characterized by a genuine international vocation and a strong commitment to the
plight of the voiceless in world affairs. Her latest film, Katmandú, was released in
2012. As in a prior Bollaín's film also featured in the Film Forum, Even the Rain that
was located in Bolivia, Katmandú takes us to the inner core of Nepalese society in
order to confront some of the central issues that condition present-day Nepal, in
particular, the caste system, public education, and the social status of women.
Based on the true story of a Barcelona teacher that left her home to pursue a new
career as an educator in Nepal, Katmandú skillfully combines a compelling
narrative focused on the intricacies of the life of an outsider in Kathmandu with the
analysis of the existential and spiritual void generated by contemporary
technological societies. The film has received several awards, among them, the
2012 Catalan Gaudí Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
(Verónica Echegui). The film will be presented in the O.V. in English, Spanish, and
Nepalese with English subtitles.

On January 28, we had a Film Forum session to present the film, Kathmandu (Katmandú, el espejo del cielo), directed by Icíar Bollaín, within the ongoing Women Director Series. The panelists were both undergraduate and graduate students under the direction of Professor Gonzalo Navajas. After the students' and Professor Navajas' presentations there was a discussion period. Some of the topics discussed were: the increasing wealth inequality in the world and the US, the defining traits of women films, independent filmmaking, and the colonial mind.
