Vahid Vahdat Zad is a PhD candidate of architecture at Texas A&M University. His research interests include the modern history of architecture and urban form in the Middle East. In his dissertation, Vahid explores and occidentalist perception of modernity, by studying the perceptions and representations of the European architecture and urbanism in 19th century Persian travel writings. His current research is focused on understanding how such syncretic understanding of modernity constructed the discourse later known as tajaddod - the Persian experience of modernity. The preliminary fragments of these projects have been presented in conferences such as SAH and IASTE and published in outlets such as the Journal of Planning History.
