The goal of the event is to refine the thinking behind and fine-tune a book devoted to 1943. The workshop will be jointly convened by Joseph Esherick, Professor Emeritus of History, UC San Diego, and Jeffrey Wasserstrom, Chancellor's Professor of History, UCI. Presentation topics will include Chiang Kai-shek's China's Destiny (a book published in 1943), the aftermath of the Hunan Famine of 1942, and Chinese Communist Party campaigns and purges of the time.
