THE SLEEPING VOICE

(La voz dormida)

Ever since George Orwell published Homage to Catalonia in 1938, many works
have appeared on the still hotly debated subject of the Spanish Civil War.  The
uniqueness of The Sleeping Voice is that it focuses on the plight of the women that
suffered, mostly in anguished silence, the devastating consequences of that
traumatic event.  The film follows the storyline of the homonymous and highly
successful novel by Dulce Chacón. The narrative is based on the meticulous
research of Chacón into the lives of many women that were forced to persecution
and marginalization because of their real or supposed allegiance to the cause of
the defeated Republic. Their testimonial accounts are presented with dramatic
intensity in both the written and the visual versions of the story. The film's director is
well-known filmmaker Benito Zambrano (Solas, Habana Blues). The film has
gained international acclaim and prizes and, in this year's Goya Awards, it received
several awards, among them, for best film, best director, and best leading actress.
The Sleeping Voice will be presented in the O.V. in Spanish with English subtitles.
