This symposium is convened on the occasion of the publication of a special issue of the journal CR: The New Centennial Review, on this topic. The issue includes contributions from Sonia Ryang, John G. Russell, Koya Nomura, Annmaria Shimabuku, Jane Yamashiro, and Nahum Dimitri Chandler, as well as previously unpublished writings of the 1930s on Japan and China by W. E. B. Du Bois.
