Race & Politics in France. The Current Aftermath of Slavery & Colonialism in France.
What?
In recent years, the legacies of slavery and colonialism have become contested terrains in France. They are used to question the national republican narrative, to show its strategies of exclusion, and the reconfiguration of a republican colonialism and of a civilizing mission. Françoise Vergès will explore these issues looking from Hexagonal France and the overseas territories.
Who?
Françoise Vergès is Consulting Professor at Goldsmiths College and president of the Committee for the Memory and History of Slavery, installed in application of the May 2011 Law recognizing slave trade and slavery crime against humanity.
