You Received your First Degree Elsewhere
Students who have already received a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and are interested in pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in another area of study may be considered for admission as 2nd Baccalaureate candidates. It is expected that applicants are prepared to enter courses at the junior level.
2nd B.A. students are subject to the following regulations in Humanities:
- Degree requirements must be completed in six quarters of attendance, excluding summers.
- You may only enroll in courses that apply toward the major to which you were admitted.
Applicants must meet required prerequisites in order to apply for a second B.A. in that field. Note that completion of the minimum required prerequisites does NOT guarantee admission. Lower-division major courses may be completed at the community college prior to enrolling at UCI.
Application for Admission as a Second B.A.: You must apply for admission with the University of California during the regular UC application filing period (November 1-30) for admission to the following fall quarter.
Applications are considered for the majors listed below.
Eligibility Criteria for Admission as a Second B.A.:
- Completion of a general education pattern, including two quarters/semesters of lower-division composition
- Humanities Core Alternative:
A total of 6 quarter courses or 4 semester courses, or a combination of thereof, is required:
- at least one lower-division composition course
- at least one lower-division history course chosen from: western, world, United States, Asian, Latin American, Middle East/African history
- at least one lower-division literature course chosen from: introduction to literature, American, British, world, area national literature, poetry, fiction/novel
- at least one lower-division philosophy course (not logic) chosen from: introductory, ethics, moral problems, history of philosophy
Additional courses may be chosen from the courses listed above and any lower-division Humanities courses acceptable for the UCI General Education Category IV.
Students may also complete one year of lower-division composition and a year-long Humanities sequence dealing with the disciplines of history, literature and philosophy which emphasizes the reading and analysis of significant texts.
NOTE: No overlap with major requirements is permitted.
- One year of college-level language other than English. (A minimum of a second year in the same language must be completed for graduation).
- Lower-division major requirements:
African American Studies: no additional courses required.
Art History: two semester/three quarter courses chosen from: Western, Asian, Islamic art history.
Asian American Studies: no additional courses required.
Chinese Studies: completion of two years of college-level Chinese.
Classics: completion of one year of college-level classical Greek or Latin.
Comparative Literature: two semester/three quarter courses chosen from: American literature, British literature, world literature, dramatic literature, poetry, fiction/novel, area national literature (i.e. other than American or British).
East Asian Cultures: two years of college-level Mandarin Chinese, college-level Japanese or college-level Korean.
English: Two courses from: American literature, British literature, dramatic literature, poetry, fiction/novel, area national literature (i.e. other than American or British).
European Studies: one European history course and two years of college-level French, German, classical Greek, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish.
Film and Media Studies: Film and Media Studies 85A, 85B, 85C.
French: completion of college-level French through the second year.
Gender and Sexuality Studies: no additional courses required.
German Studies: completion of college-level German through the second year.
Global Cultures: two semester/three quarter world history courses.
Global Middle East Studies: No additional courses required.
History: One transfer course equivalent to History 70A,B,C,D,E or F and two additional semester or three quarter History courses.
--- History with a Specialization for Future Teachers: Transfer course equivalents to either (History 21A, 21B, 21C) or (History 40A, 40B, 40C); and one additional History course.
Literary Journalism: one course chosen from: American literature, British literature, world literature, poetry, fiction/novel, area national literature (i.e. other than American or British).
Philosophy: one course chosen from: introduction to philosophy, ethics, or contemporary moral problem; and two semester/three quarter courses chosen from: history of ancient, medieval, modern, contemporary philosophy.
Religious Studies: one year of world religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Asian, Comparative Religions).
Spanish: completion of college-level Spanish through the second year.
