| FRENCH (W27) | 50 PARIS, ART CAPITAL | NETTLETON, C. |
| From Émile Zola’s “artiste flâneur” to the American Lost Generation writers of the Jazz Age, Paris and the arts have been inextricably intertwined. A global hub, the “City of Light” is considered as an intercontinental muse and a work of art itself. In our analysis of works by Guy de Maupassant, Guillaume Apollinaire, Josephine Baker, Anne and Claire Berest, Hervé Le Tellier, and other groundbreaking authors, artists, filmmakers, and critics who lived in Paris from the 19th-21st centuries, we will discover how Paris became both the locus and the subject of artistic innovation worldwide. Students will analyze a broad range of artistic and literary works and their cultural and historical contexts through discussions, essays, presentations, and creative assignments. This introductory course is for non-majors and on France's role in the modern world and its cultural connections to Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. It is taught in English.
