Summer 18 Interns

Celeste Armenta was  Education Department Intern for Curator Marinta Skupin at the Laguna Art Museum who Celeste writes was a "gracious and wonderful supervisor who did all she could to help me gain the most from the position.” Celeste began her internship by familiarizing herself with their current exhibit, a centennial exhibition “Art Colony: The Laguna Beach Art Association”, researching, organizing, and preparing material various materials. FOAH will be led on a private tour with Malcolm Warner, the museum's Executive Director on Tuesday, January 8th, 2019.

Celeste helped develop a curriculum guide for Educators Night,an evening event held for local area elementary school teachers to view the current exhibit, and helped prepare lecture materials related to how the exhibition closely relates to California’s school standards, which is helpful to educators planning a school trip to the museum. She reviewed “Art Colony” exhibit’s art catalog, researched third and fourth grade California standards, and compared the exhibit’s art to school standards and studied the exhibition in detail before she chose and researched six paintings based upon their compatibility with the standards. Celeste organized records including title, date and medium, with painting and artist background information, correlated the standards  to each painting, and developed activities for teachers and their his/her students, developing a template that could be used for subsequent Educator Nights.

Celeste's internship experience provided her  with "a great understanding of how, not only the Education department works, but how closely each department works together to arrange all aspects of the museum.” She notes “I am very thankful to all of those who had a part in the decision that allowed me to have this experience and the financial assistance that allowed me to travel to Laguna and back home. Thank you so much, FOAH!”

As an intern in the Department of Art History later in the summer, Celeste also assisted Cecilia with the latest FOAH magazine, designed by intern and student leader Kevin Pham (who is currently studying abroad in South Korea) and with planning for Jamie Nisbet's Spiral Jetty field trip help over Thanksgiving Break 2018.

See the section on IMCA internships for more about our students' summer internship experiences.
