How do I proceed if I have high school or heritage background?
Take the placement exam (strongly recommended), or request authorization from a counselor of the
student's major *
I have an AP score
Request authorization from a counselor of the student's major
- will earn credit starting at 1C with score 3, or 2C with score 4 or 5
What if I have college-level coursework?

*Consider 1 year in high school equivalent to 1 quarter at UCI. You may enroll at the level where you would place based on high school years completed, or you may go back one quarter (e.g. a student with 3 years in high school may enroll in 2A or 1C). If you enroll in levels lower than this without appropriate placement exam results, you will not earn credit. A student who completed high school language courses more than 5 years ago may enroll for credit at the 1A level.
German placement testing is conducted by the German Language Program. Contact Glenn Levine, glevine@uci.edu, not by the Testing Center, for placement.
